Ethel McDonald was employed for several years in the District Attorney's office
and in the County Clerk's office and served as District Court Clerk for five
years. Ethel McDonald resigned that position to move to Santa Fe, New Mexico to
accept a position in the State Land Office, after which she was employed by the
New Mexico State Police from 1946 through 1957. At that time she retired with
more than thirty years in the County and State government service. Following
her retirement, she was employed as Secretary-Treasurer of the New Mexico
Sheriffs' and Police Association, leaving that position in October, 1974.

CARLSBAD----Ethel M. Highsmith, 88, of Tempe, Arizona., died Monday, May 13, 1996, at her home.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the West Funeral Home Chapel. Mike Manley of Albuquerque Chrisitian Children's Home will officiate. Burial will follow in Carlsbad Cemetery.

Services are under the direction of West Funeral Home Inc.

Mrs. Highsmith was born July 26, 1907, to Walter L. and Pearl Ora Jennings McDonald in Seven Rivers, N.M. She was the first District Court Clerk for Eddy and Lea counties in 1945. She moved to Santa Fe and went to work for the State Police from 1946-1957. She served as state secretary for the sheriff's and State Police associations for 25 years.

Survivors include her daughter, Betty Jo Highsmith, of Tempe.
