John V. MacDowell Sr. - Retired from TranSouth

John Vinson MacDowell Sr., 80, of 500 Vernon St., died Wednesday, March 19, 2003, in Upstate Carolina Medical Center after a brief illness.

Mr. MacDowell was the son of the late John William and Rainsford DuBose MacDowell. He was a retired senior vice-president with TranSouth, formerly Stephenson Finance, and was co-owner of Stephenson Ford and founder of Stephenson Mobile Homes. He served as a pilot instructor during World War II and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He is survived by his wife, Frances Rivers MacDowell, and two sons, Thomas Barrington MacDowell of Gaffney and John Vinson MacDowell Sr. of Florence; two sisters, Babs Dedmon of Nashville, Tenn., and Margaret McElveen of Hendersonville, N.C.; a brother, Marion MacDowell of Conover, N.C.; four grandchildren, Meredith and Maegan MacDowell, Jake MacDowell of Mt. Pleasant and Avery MacDowell Kauffman of Columbia.

A son, Richard Baird MacDowell, predeceased him.

Graveside services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Gordon Hamilton of the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation.

The family will receive friends from 3-5 p.m. at the home following the graveside service.

Memorials may be made to the Charles Lea Center/Zion Hill House, 195 Burdette St., Spartanburg, S.C. 29307 or to a charity of one's choice.
