According to one of his descendants, George was a school teacher.

George Sanders was the only Sanders in Jackson County, Alabama, at the time of the 1860 census who owned slaves (two).

On March 24, 1866 George was declared mentally incompetent due to age on the petition of his son Joseph, who assumed guardianship of his father.

After George died, his lands were sold by his son Joseph to Jesse Elbert Sanders and Thomas N. Allison in 1870 for for 4675 dollars.

Much of the personal property was sold at an estate sale. The family Bible was sold for .10 to his daughter Deborah Sanders Dolberry.

His exact birth date is unknown but was almost certainly 1783 or 1784. The March 1866 petition lists his age as 83.

The estate settlement is a gold mine of information regarding the names and marriages of his children, many of whom no longer lived in the state.

He and his wife Phebe had eleven children. Phebe (or Phoebe) was the daughter of Jacob Saunders of Montgomery County, North Carolina. Although Phebe and George had the same surname, the two Sanders families were not blood relations.
