Almedia Greever, 96, of Winfield, died December 9, 2010 at at Cumbernauld
Village.

Miss Greever was born May 6, 1914 in Cowley County, the daughter of Clyde and
Bessie Greever. Educated in Winfield and Arkansas City, she began her teaching
career in the early 1930s after graduating from Arkansas City Junior College,
known today as Cowley County College, with an associate degree. She taught all
12 grades in a one-room school near Gouda Springs, walking the mile to the
school each morning to start the wood burning stove, regardless of the weather.
During the summers, she attended Southwestern College. After earning her
bachelor's degree in education from Southwestern, she taught for several years
in the Gouda Springs elementary school before starting her teaching career in
Winfield. During the years of World War II, Miss Greever and other friends from
Winfield spent their summers in New York City working on their master's degree
in education at Columbia University. After Miss Greever taught in Winfield for
nearly a decade she became the principal at Stevenson School, and later was
principal for Whittier and Country View schools until her retirement in 1980.
She also taught in many summer programs at Southwestern College.

She was responsible for the creation Herbert Hawk Scholarship. She visited the
different classes when they had their class reunions and asked for donations to
start the scholarship fund for Winfield High School graduates. Very active in
Soroptimist International of Winfield, the organization created the Almedia
Greever Continuing Education Scholarship in her honor.

She loved to travel and after learning to drive and buying her first car in the
early 1950s, she took her nieces and nephews on many road trips all over Kansas,
Missouri, Colorado and New Mexico. In an effort to keep her first car like new,
her motto was "no feet, no fight, no eat." After her retirement she continued
to travel to visit friends and relatives, including several trips to England,
Holland and Germany.

She will be greatly missed by her nieces and nephews: Mack and Paula Greever of
Claremore, OK, Nick Greever of Grand Junction, Co, Holly and Ralph Haynes of
Auburn, WA, Janice Greever of Las Vegas, NV, Karen Umphenour of Nevada, MO, Bill
Greever of Nevada, MO; great nieces and nephews, Annette Greever of Winfield,
Jennifer Greever of Lawrence, Jason Greever of Emporia, Tracy Greever-Rice of
Columbia, Mo and, Jill Greever Fitzpatrick of Little Rock, AR and Chris Greever
