Retired policeman dies at 73 Retired Fort Wayne police officer Chester W Axt, 73, died at 10:08 am Sunday in Northern Michigan Hospital, Petoskey, Mich, near his summer home at Pickerel Lake. A Fort Wayne native, Axt joined the Fort Wayne Police Department in 1927 as a patrolman. He was promoted in 1935 to patrol sergeant and in 1945 to captain of detectives. He retired in 1948 after 21 years of service. Mr Axt went on to work 17 years for Flint & Waiting in Kendallville, retiring nine years ago. He is survivied by his wife, Catherine; a son, Richard; and two daughters, Mrs Gloria Lothamer and Mrs Donna Morrissley, all of Fort Wayne. Services will be at 3 pm Wednesday in DO McComb & Sons Foster Park Funeral Home. Friends may call after 2 pm Tuesday. Masonic services conducted by Summit City F&AM No 190 will be at 7:30 pm Tuesday in the funeral home. Burial will be in Lindenwood Cemetery. Fort Wayne Journal Gazette - June 13, 1978
