From the Northome, Gemmel, Mizpah 1903-1976 CENTENNIAL HISTORY

I came to America from Norway May 5, 1910, unable to speak English. It was hard, I arrived at Fargo, North Dakota. I married Olaf Dahl and moved to Montana. In 1918 we planted 40 acres of corn and 20 acres of wheat. We harvested two loads of Russian Thistle for all of that. The grasshoppers, cut worms and the deer took the rest of it. The coyote took our chickens if we forgot to shut the door at night. In 1921 we moved to Mizpah, to the Forest Grove Township. Have been here ever since and have loved it. Here I helped my husband cut the trees off our land with a cross-cut saw. Them days the top price for good beef steak was 12 cents a pound, Lee bib overalls were $1.00 and mens best shoes were $3.00. Women could earn 3.00 a week and a good man got $30.00 a month. You know we girls them days had black stockings with white feet. After my husband died in 1943 I worked here and there. I spent 10 years a Mizpah School as cook. I enjoyed that, as I like children. I have done a lot of spinning and knitting, making socks, mittens and such for my family. i have been to International Falls, Mizpah, Blackduck, Littlefork and Headstart schools spinning yarn and singing Norwegian songs for the kids. They like that. I don't spin so much anymore but knitting I do all the time. Also have done a lot of rug weaving and quilt making. The year of 1932 I took a dozen eggs to Pete Sarasin Store. Got a bar of soap. Got home, rubbed clothes on a board for the 5 of us. We got 5 cents a dozen for eggs and sop was 5 cents a bar. November 19, 1926 we got snow up to our knees. In 1940 you all know about the bad snow storm we had on November 11. When I came out to the barn, I could not see the door for the big snow drift, but I got through to the cows so they could have some hay. I have been in the hospital only once in my life. Best of all I am moving to the new, low rent housing in Northome. A little house on the farm by my son, Martin has been my home for many years. (submitted by Lena Dahl for the centennial history of Mizpah 1976)

Lena and my Grandpa Nels Edwardson came over on the S/S CARMANIA to Ellis Island.
