Hans Andersen Foss, Norwegian-American author, newspaperman, and supporter of the temperance movement, was born the son of a small tenant farmer from Modum, Norway. Foss immigrated to the United States in 1877 where he first tried his hand at farming in Minnesota. In 1884 his first novel, "The Cotter's Son" (Husmandsgutten) was serialized in Decorah-Posten, a Norwegian language newspaper published in Iowa. The popular story was serialized and increased newspaper circulation by 6,000 subscribers. The tremendous popularity of The Cotter's Son serial was credited with saving the paper from bankruptcy. Foss's imaginative plots and energetic writing style made him a popular author in the Norwegian-American immigrant community. Five more novels followed. A proponent of the prohibition movement, Foss edited several temperance publications and served for five years as editor of Dakota-Bladet (The Dakota Newspaper) from 1886-1887 and Normanden, (The Norseman) in Grand Forks, ND from 1888 to 1893. In 1890, the Normanden became the voice of the Populist party in North Dakota. His tendency to sermonize and the lack of English-language translations caused his books to quickly fall out of fashion in America. Foss's lasting literary contribution is principally his influence on more widely known writers such as Peer Olson Strømme and Ole Rølvaag. In 1906, Foss gave up the newspaper business and became a grain dealer, eventually settling in Minot, North Dakota, where he lived until his death in 1929. He was married twice and had seven children. Andrew Hansen (1874-1921), his first son, was born in Norway with first wife: Maren Oline Eriksen. He had six children with his second wife, Inger Olsdatter Fjeld, they were Marie Inga (1887 – ?), Herman O. Foss (1889–1970), Clarence H. (1891–1968), Louise Clara, (1893–1927), Harriet or Henrietta D.(1898 –1989), and Mabel S. Foss (1904 –?).
