John Coles Evans, 56, of Manteo, died suddenly Sunday morning, Jan. 30, 1944, in the Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City where he had been taken the day before for treatment. Mr. Evans had been in poor health for several years but had worked as a civilian guard at the Manteo Naval Air Station until the day before his death.

Mr. Evans, a native and prominent citizen of Manteo, was the son of the late Asa V. Evans and Celia Evans.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Mann Evans; two daughters: Miss Ruth Evans and Mrs. Hugh Basnight of Manteo; one granddaughter, Nancy Coles Basnight of Manteo; two brothers: Charles R. Evans of Manteo and Henry W. Evans of Washington, DC; and one sister, Miss Bonnybel Evans of Manteo.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon at Mount Olivet Methodist Church by Rev. M.W. Maness, pastor of the church, assisted by Rev. James W. Sneeden, pastor of the Wanchese Methodist Church. Burial was in the Manteo Cemetery. Active pallbearers were J.M. Vannote, H.A. Creef, Martin Kellog, Jr., Ivy Evans, A.B.L. Twiford and M.K. Fearing. Mr. Evans was a member of Mount Olivet Methodist Church in Manteo of which his father was a charter member.
