He was born Dec. 13, 1955, in Lorain, and was a lifelong area resident.
He graduated from Admiral King High School in 1974, where he was the first African-American drum major in the Lorain school system. He also attended Akron University, majoring in music.
Calloway was employed for 12 years by the Lorain City Schools with the Jump Start program at Charleston School.
He was a member of The Church On The North Coast, Lorain, where he was one of the church musicians. He was a former member of The Cathedral of Praise Church, where he was choir director and minister of music. He was also the director of the Lorain City School Gospel Choir and past director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People choir. He was also a former musician in the State of Ohio Choir Pentecostal Assemblies of the World and a private music instructor.
Survivors include his wife of 24 years, Sharon (nee Jones) Calloway, of Lorain; daughters Brenda McNiel of Columbus, Yolanda Jones of Lorain, Nicole Jones of Cleveland, Latasha, Ciera, Kyla and Diamond Calloway, all of Lorain; seven grandchildren; sisters Roberta Bennet, Evangelist Ruth Ann Pugh and Robbin Anderson, all of Lorain; brother, Ollie Higgins, of Lorain; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by son, Monroe Jones; parents, Robert Calloway Sr. and Mildred Calloway-Higgins; and stepfather, Ollie Higgins.
Friends may call Friday 4 to 7 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home, 3001 Elyria Ave., Lorain. Friends may call Saturday from 11 a.m. until time of service at noon in Church on the North Coast, 4125 Leavitt Road, Lorain. The Rev. Louis Kayatin, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
