Mary Elizabeth Stewart was the daughter of Joseph Alexander Stewart and Emily Antionette Martin . She was the second wife of Rufus Henry Dunn . His first wife , Nannie Navada Bush , died in child birth along with their ninth child .

My older brothers and sister recalled that Mary Elizabeth never wore shoes , except when the Dunn family went to church . Every Sunday without exception my grandfather would take the entire Dunn family to the local Methodist Church .

Mary Elizabeth had been born on the Stewart farm in the rural , agrarian community of Holman Crossroads in Coosa County . She became accustomed to not wearing shoes ; and when she wore them to church on Sundays , it was obvious to everyone that she did not like wearing them .

My grandparents had three children : Sula Mae Dunn Carroll , Annie Dunn Carroll , and Robert Henry Dunn . With aunt Sula Mae dying in a tornado in Kahatchee on April 11 , 1944 , and uncle Robert dying in the South of France on August 20 , 1944 ; only my mother, Annie Dunn Carroll , survived to die of natural causes on February 1 , 1993 .

Mary Elizabeth's mother , and my great grandmother , Emily Antionette Martin , was the origin of my middle name .
