His paintings covered a wide range of subjects, such as still-life, landscapes, marine scenes, etc. Among his most remembered works are "The Battle of Lexington", "Lincoln at Gettysburg", & his portrait of Lincoln in the Boston State House. He was also a noted etcher & illustrator.
