He was born Jan. 5, 1923, in Lorain, and remained a lifelong resident.
He graduated from Lorain High School in the class of 1941-B and attended Lorain County Community College.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving with the rank of technician 5th grade in Melbourne, Australia, in India, Burma and China and on the Burma Road as a truck driver. He received two Bronze Star medals, and a Meritorious Unit Award, and the Asia-Pacific theater of operations, Good Conduct and World War II Victory medals.
Coleman was employed by the City of Avon Lake for over 33 years, retiring in 1986 as a sanitation supervisor. He worked on the Great Lakes aboard the Governor Miller and was employed at the steel mill for 11 years.
He was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church, Lorain, for more than 40 years, serving as a trustee and member of the building committee, senior choir and male chorus.
Survivors include his wife of 14 years, Lillie Mae Middlebrook-Coleman; daughters Sherry Shine and Janice Chapman, both of Lorain; son, Kevin Coleman of Lorain; stepdaughters Helen Sharp of Florence, S.C., and Gwendolyn Knox of Lorain; stepsons Richard G. Middlebrook of Elyria and David of St. Paul, Minn.; brothers Arnold Coleman of Philadelphia, Pa., and Robert of Lorain; sister, Laura Croom of Warrensville; and 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Edna Coleman-Finley; father, Raymond Coleman Sr.; son, Bruce Coleman; sister, Louise Trust; stepbrother, Robert Finley Jr.; and first wife, Theresa Coleman.
Friends may call Saturday from 10:30 a.m. until time of service at noon at Mount Zion Baptist Church, 1516 E. 30th St., Lorain. Melvin Woodward, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
