She was born Sept. 20, 1923, in Reynolds, Ga. and lived in Lorain for over 60 years.

Mrs. Hernandez retired from U.S. Steel (National Tube) after 20 years.

She was a member of Greater St. Matthews A.M.E. Church of Lorain, where she served in the missionary society, sang in the senior choir and was on the Stewards Board. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and playing the piano and organ.

Survivors include her husband of 36 years, Carmelo Hernandez; daughter, Nancy Dampier-Howard of Lorain; sons James of Youngstown and Joel and Joseph Dale Dampier, both of Lorain; 33 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Fannie McDowell Sr.; son, John L. Dampier; and brothers Henry McDowell Jr. and Paul McDowell.

Friends may call Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service at noon at Greater St. Matthews A.M.E. Church, 1909 W. 24th St., Lorain. The Rev. Dr. John Newby, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
