He was born Sept. 12, 1964, in Elyria. He was a 1983 graduate of Admiral King High School. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served for eight years in air traffic school.

Dampier attended the Park Street Seven Day Adventist Church, Oberlin. He enjoyed art and was an avid draftsman. He also loved astronomy and nature.

Survivors include his father, James A. of Youngstown; brother, James A. Dampier II of Lorain; sisters Ava A. Moore of Ft. Stewart, Ga. and Beverly K. Dampier of Elyria; grandparents Carmello and Jamina Hernandez, both of Lorain; four aunts, three uncles and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanor Marie Dampier in 1996; and brother, Ronald B. Dampier in 2000.

Friends may call Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Brown-Robinson Funeral Home, 2652 Broadway, Lorain, where services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. The Rev. Alvin Lindsey, pastor of Faith Ministries Christian Center, will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
