He was born Oct. 12, 1928, in Lorain.

He graduated from Lorain High School, and after graduation joined the U.S. Air Force, serving until his retirement.

After retiring from the Air Force, Charlton returned to Lorain and was employed as a security guard at Lorain Community Hospital until 1992.

He was an avid sports fan, especially of football, and had played the game as a student at Lorain High School. He had predicted that the Patriots would win the Super Bowl.

Survivors include his wife of 10 years, Vivian Wooten Charlton; stepson, Whister Winford; and nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fletcher and Anna (nee Mason) Charlton; brothers Fletcher Jr., Charlie, Thomas and George Charlton; and sisters Emma Mae, Mattie, Ossie Lee and Annie.

Friends may call Friday 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Brown-Robinson Funeral Home, 2652 Broadway, Lorain. Funeral services will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in Community Baptist Church, 617 W. 24th St., Lorain, with the Rev. William Boatright officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
