Interment was in the Woodlawn Cemetery at Hayti, German Funeral Home in Hayti was in charge and the body laid in state in the funeral home chapel from 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 20, until the time of the service. Officiating was Rev. Sidney Peterson, pastor of the church, and the Rev. M.S. Lloyd, minister of the New Madrid Baptist Association. The deceased was for many years the only surviving charter member of the church.
Mrs. Sturm, who reached her 90th birthday on March 7, died at the Pemiscot County Memorial Hospital Monday morning, April 19, after an extended illness. A respiratory complication was given as the cause of death.
She was born in Hayti March 7, 1881, a daughter of the late John Falson and Mary Hart Oates. She and John S. Sturm were united in marriage on September 2, 1902. He preceded her in death in 1944. To this union four children were born. A son, Raymond, died in infancy. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. G.M. (Hermine) Reid, Vancouver, Washington; and Mrs. Sheldon (Celeste) Hornbuckle, Jacksonville, Fla., and one son, Max Sturm of Hayti; also a brother, Sidney P. Oates, Hayti.
Grandchildren are Eric Sturm, Memphis, Tenn., Philip R. Sturm, Cincinnati, Ohio, Paul W. Sturm, Caruthersville and Shelly Hornbuckle, Jacksonville, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Mrs. Paul Gipps, Orlando, Fla. and Marcia Sturm, Memphis.
Five great grandchildren also survive, and three nieces, Mrs. Fred Chaffin of Hayti; Mrs. J.G. Shaw, Jr., Birmingham, Ala. and Mrs. Glen Crowe of Hollandale, Mississippi.
