He was born in Lorain, living in the area all his life.
He attended Lorain public schools and received his GED from the American School of Chicago.
Barnett was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Upon his discharge, he started his own business as a painter and with a salvage company.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Lorain, and a former member of Second Baptist Church.
He loved all sports, especially boxing and could name most boxing champions.
He is survived by his wife, Madeline; sons Philip and Dexter Barnett, both of Lorain; daughters Crystal Brownlee of Louisville, Ky., and Cynthia Barnett of Lorain; five grandchildren; sister, Leola B. Frierson of Lorain; and many other relatives.
He was preceded in death by a son, Howard Franklin Barnett; parents, Huly and Ethel Barnett; sister, Gladys Gordon Barnett; and two uncles.
Friends may call Thursday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at Carter Funeral Home, 3001 Elyria Ave., Lorain, where services will be Friday at 1 p.m. The Rev. Bill Rowe, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery, Lorain.
