THOMASTON – John Pulsifer Dana, 79, died Saturday, at Maine Veterans Home in Augusta, after a long illness.

Born in Thomaston, he was the son of Harold and Helen Pulsifer Dana. Educated in local schools, he was a 1948 graduate of Thomaston High School. That next fall he attended Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield and for the next two years attended the University of Maine at Orono, until being drafted into the Maine Army National Guard. He served two years with the National Guard, and at the time of his discharge in June of 1952, had obtained the rank of Sergeant First Class.

At that time, John returned to the University of Maine, where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education.

An avid sportsman, throughout his high school and college years John played baseball and basketball. For more than 28 years, he lived in Pittsfield where he raised his three children and taught them the game of Golf. Throughout his career, he taught Mathematics at Maine Central Institute. An accomplished golfer, John ultimately became a Golf Professional and was a member of the Professional Golfers Association of America of which he was honored as a Life Member. While at MCI he was active with the school's golf team.

On June 26, 1987, he married a high school classmate, at Lincolnville. Following his retirement in 1991, the couple moved to Lakeland, Florida, where they resided until returning to this area in 2007.

Mr. Dana was pre-deceased by a son, Jon Dana in 2005 and a brother, James Dana. He is survived by his wife of Thomaston; one son, and his wife of Incirlik, Turkey; one daughter, and her companion of Buxton; two step-daughters, of Westbrook; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
