Electrician's Mate, Second Class, U.S.Navy
While serving on the USS Bass (SS-164) a Barracuda class submarine, in the Pacific Ocean, off Balboa, Panama, a fire broke out in the after battery room and quickly spread to the after torpedo room and starboard motor. Leonard Ode Blagg and 25 other enlisted men died from asphyxiation. After undergoing repairs at Philadelphia Navy Yard, USS Bass proceded to New London, Conn., where she conducted secret experiments of Block Island in December of 1943. USS Bass was decommissioned at the Naval Submarine Base New London on March 3, 1945 and was expended as a target and sunk on March 18, 1945
