Julia Marie (Halsey) Malnar, age 80, passed away early Tuesday morning, March 19, 2002, at Pine View Care Center, St. Charles, IL.

She was born March 10, 1922, on the family farm near Virgil, IL, the daughter of Victor and Beda (Larson) Hjelmberg. Julia grew up in the Virgil and Elburn area where she attended county schools as well as Elburn High School. On October 24, 1942, she was united in marriage to Truman "Curley" Halsey and they made their home in Elburn where they raised a family of three sons, Chris, Rick, and Vern, and a daughter, Rita. Following Curley's sudden death in 1973 Julia continued to live in Elburn until 1976 when she was united in marriage to Rudy Malnar. They were wed on June 26 and moved to Batavia where they have since made their home.

For thirty-four years she was employed at Moline Corp., St. Charles, where she worked in the office until retiring in 1984. In the years that followed, Julia and Rudy were able to travel and enjoy seeing the country. Julia loved to dance and enjoyed many wonderful evenings at Moose Lodges around the area. Friday night was reserved for fish fries and any time was good for a game of Hearts or Skipbo. There was always time for grandchildren and everyone remembered her for the best pies and cookies anywhere.

In addition to her husband, Rudy of Batavia, she is survived by four children, Chris (Cindy) Halsey of Sugar Grove, IL, Vern (Anita Hughes) Halsey of Fairbanks, AK, Rick (Kathy) Halsey of Kaneville, IL, Rita (Jim) Cotti of Elburn; seven grandchildren, Chris (Julie) Halsey of Yorkville, Lance Halsey of Parker, AZ, Troy (Kim) Halsey of Manchester, IA, Todd Halsey of Batavia, IL, Stephanie (Brian) Ruppert of Orion, IL, Brian Halsey of Batavia, IL, and Chad Cotti of Oshkosh, WI; five step-children, Josie (Dave) Hansen of Morris, IL, Mike Malnar of Wheelersburg, OH, Jim (Carol) Malnar of Gresham, OR, John (Ella) Malnar of Cambridge, WI, Steven (Teri) Malnar of Clarksville, TN; thirteen step-grandchildren, John, Christen, Kathryn and Adam, Matthew and Allen, Douglas and Lori, Chris, Curt, and Kelsey, and John and Heide; a brother, Carl Hjelmberg of Sycamore, IL, and a sister, Helen (Ron) Gilchrist of St. Charles; a sister-in-law, Rose Hjelmberg of Sycamore, IL, and two brothers-in-law, Thomas Malnar of Batavia and Max Malnar of Chicago; two sisters-in-law, Annie Malnarand, of Milwaukee, WI, and Evelyn Daniels of Palm Harbor, FL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Truman "Curley" Halsey; a daughter in infancy; two brothers, Bert and Henry Hjelmberg, and a step-son, Toni Malnar.

Visitation will be held Thursday evening, March 21, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Community Congregational Church, Shannon and Main Streets, Elburn. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 11 a.m. at the church. The Rev. Katherine Lawes will officiate and interment will follow at Blackberry Cemetery, Elburn, IL.

Memorials may be made in her name and mailed in care of P.O. Box 66, Elburn, IL 60119.
