John El Marks, M.D., 83, of Aurora, passed away at his home Friday, March 15,2002.
    John was born April 27, 1918 in Wrights, IL, the son of John C. and Eva (Lanterman) Marks.
    He was raised in Woodriver, IL and attended local schools, graduated with the Class of 1936. Following graduation he continued his education in the Pre-Med Program at University of Illinois at Champaign. He attended medical school at UIC in 1942 and served his internship at Cook County Hospital, Chicago until 1943. John was united in marriage to Jeanne Major, December 24, 1943 in Chicago. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted and served his country in the United States Navy as an Aviation Medical Examiner as well as a Flight Surgeon aboard the U.S.S. Saratoga (CV3) and the U.S.S. Cassan Bay (CVE69) and received his honorable discharge in 1946. John went on to practice medicine in Whitefish, MT until 1948 when he moved to Aurora, IL. He built Weston Medical Center in 1957 which was the first pure medical building in the area. John practiced medicine with his cousin, Dr. James Marks until his retirement in 1972. Following his early retirement, John enjoyed piloting his own private plane and was an avid fisherman.
    John was a staff member at all the Aurora area hospitals and served as the Chief of Staff at the old St. Charles Hospital, also in Aurora. He was a proud member of several area organizations including the Loyal Order of the Elks and the AmVets.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Jeanne; a sister, Dorothy DeLong; and a son-in-law, James R. Street.
    He is survived by three children, Ross Marks of Las Vegas, NV, Diane Street of Aurora, IL and Jack (Denise) Marks of Easley, SC; four grandchildren, Polly (Marc) Ludena of Wheaton, IL, James Street of Normal, IL, Russell and Christopher Marks of Easley, SC; and a great grandchild, Ross Ludena; two sisters, Margaret Sandy of Libertyville, IL and Aileen (Mack) Duncan of Houston, TX; and his best friend, Marilyn Risch of Montgomery, IL.
    Friends may call from 3 to 7 PM at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, Tuesday, March 19, 2002.
    Funeral Services to celebrate his life will be held at Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, 176 Main St., Sugar Grove at 10 AM Wednesday, March 20, 2002 with Rev. Steve Good officiating and private family interment in Chicago will follow the service.
    In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church and mailed in his name to P.O. Box 66, Elburn, IL, 60119.
