He was the son of David Uriah Sell and Eliza Jane Stonesifer Sell. David U. Sell was drafted into Company E, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry on November 13, 1862. He deserted a week later and was never heard from again. [While Levi's obituary states that his father was killed in the Civil War, no records have been found of David to substantiate this assertion.]

He married Flora Jane Hess on October 16, 1883. He was a farmer and a painter in the area of Taneytown, MD. They moved to Hanover, PA in 1913. He was seriously injured in a painting accident in June 1914. He died after collapsing on the sidewalk a year later. He had nine children: Rhoda Morelock, Oscar, Charles, William, Mary Blanche Thompson, George, Naomi Kuhn, Ruth and Lucy Nace.
