Luigi (Louis) Russo was a member of what is now called the DeCavalcante Family in New Jersey. Russo operated out of Newark, New Jersey, and was an ally of Mafia Boss Salvatore Maranzano. On Sept. 10,1931, Russo and Sam Monaco, who was the Underboss of the Family, disappeared. This was the same day Maranzano was murdered. Russo and Monaco were found in Newark Bay a few days later. They had been tortured and shot to death, their bodies were weighted down and dumped in the bay. Both their bodies floated to the surface and washed ashore.
