Born in 1823 to John Lane, Esq and Nabby Emerson Lane, she only has the finest things written about her.

From her out going personality to being able to make anyone from any walk of life comfortable in her presence and with their conversation.

It has been noted that in a time when after dinner men took to another room for an after dinner cigar and brandy that Emma and Frederick could be strolling the grounds or be in another room in deep conversation.

She died from kidney disease and Governor Smyth reportedly did all he could to save her, with specialist arriving every day to see what could be done. It was not to be, she died in January 1885 and he remarried 6 weeks later to Marion Hamilton, a bookkeeper in his bank who was 47 years his junior.
