EX-TEACHER CONNIE CHAPMAN DIES
A long-time figure in Carlsbad schools and civic organizations, Jessica Constance "Connie" Chapman, died at her home here today.
Born in Le Mars, Iowa, Ms. Chapman came from the families of John and Priscilla Alden and Henry Burt. Her maternal family was of American pioneer stock.
She graduated Valedictorian from Le Mar High School, and received her B.A. degree in history and mathematics from the University of Iowa in 1920. She then obtained her M.A. from the University of Wisconsin, and attended summer sessions at several colleges.
She began her teaching career in Iowa, and in 1929 came to Carlsbad because of her mother's health. She worked here in the History Department and coached girls' tennis for three years. She also enjoyed traveling and studying American and European history.
She retired from teaching after 35 years at Carlsbad High School, and her time was taken up by active participation in many organizations where she served as a member, organization president or regent.
CHAPMAN
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church for Jessica Constance "Connie" Chapman, 86, 1003 Riverside Dr., who died at her home Tuesday.
Burial will be in Carlsbad Cemetery with the Rev. Earl Harvey of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Denton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Pallbearers will be Tom Hansen, Bill Loos, Tom McIlvain, Horace Hubert, Walter Gerrells, Joe Mike Willis, M.E. Yeats and Ralph Roe.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Connie Chapman Scholarship Fund at the Carlsbad National Bank.
