Prochorus Lee O'Neal, who with Capt. John Allen Midgett and four others in 1918, participated in the sensational rescue of the crew of the British steamship Mirlo, fell dead Saturday afternoon while entering the door of the Methodist church in Rodanthe.

He was 65 years old and lived at Waves, a nearby community, all his life. He was retired from the Coast Guard service. He was one of the best beloved and respected citizens of the county. The British government had decorated him with a medal from King George Fifth.

He had been given the American Cross of Honor along with the other members who participated in the rescue of the British seamen from a sea of blazing oil after their ship had been sunk by a German submarine.

Capt. John A. Midgett is dead, but other members of the crew are living--LeRoy Midgett of Wanchese, Clarence, Zion and Arthur Midgett of Rodanthe. The body was interred in the Manteo Cemetery.
