Son of Adam Speck and Mary (Stayman). In 1860 he was listed as a farmer in Hopewell Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. William was a veteran of the Civil War. His service was very short. He enlisted in Newville, Cumberland County at the age of 16. Mustered into federal service at Washington, DC. on August 17, 1861 as a private with Company H, 3rd Pa. Cavalry, (60th Pa.), but was discharged by surgeon's certificate on August 27, 1861. He never re-entered the military. He married Belinda Alice Thompson on December 10, 1872 in Wayne County, Ohio. They had 7-children:
Cora Ann, b. 8-25-1874
Harry Barn, b. 5-23-1877
Ida A., b. 1879
Emma Blanche, b. 12-29-1881
Lula May, b. 11-10-1883
Ralph Ash, b. 2-11-1886
Vesta Blonde, b. 10-15-1890

NOTE: The family is listed in the 1860 Cumberland County census as "Speek." This may have been the proper pronunciation.
