From the Cincinnati Review, December 27, 1916:

Chas. E. Smith Dead

After only a few days illness Charles E. Smith, an old and well known citizen of this community, died at the home of his son G.M. Smith (George Milton Smith) south of here Friday, December 22, death being due to pneumonia. Mr. Smith had made his home with his son for a number of years, his wife having died in 1894.

Mr. Smith was born in Indiana, Sept. 12, 1843 and was 73 years, 3 months and 10 days of age. He came with his parents to Iowa in 1854 and settled near Walnut City, this county, and has been a resident of this and Putnam County, Mo. eversince [sic]. Mr. Smith was a member of the Baptist church for fifty years and was a man of strict integrity and held in high esteem by all who knew him. He was married to Amanda Chistal [sic], Sept. 14, 1856 and to them were born five children of whom four are living. They are G.M. Smith, Cincinnati; Mrs. Mary Clawson, Novinger, Mo.; Mrs. Jennie Glascock, Seymour, Ia. and T.D. Smith of Centerville. There are eighteen grandchildren and one great grandchild. He also leaves a brother of Moberly, Mo. and a sister in California.

The funeral was held at the late residence Sunday conducted by Re. Thos. Whorton of Unionville and burial was at Mendota cemetery.
