SGT. JAMES LOYD BURKE

Reburial services for Staff Sgt. James L. Burke, 23, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Burke of 6914 Fair Oaks, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Weiland Funeral Church, 2909 Live Oak.

Burke was killed in action August 11, 1943, while serving as tail gunner on a bomber. He had entered the Air Force on January 9, 1942 and was stationed in England. He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.

Burke was educated in Throckmorton.

Surviving are his parents; four brothers, Wendell Burke of Downey, California, Marion Burke of Temple City, California, Harold Burke of Dallas, and Bill Burke of Arlington; and a sister, Mrs. Bruce Parks of Abilene.

The Rev. Rufus Kitchens of Dunn will officiate at the services, assisted by the Rev. Franklin Ray of Dallas. Burial will be in the field of honor in Restland Memorial Park.

Note: He moved with his family to Young County, Texas in 1926. His parents lived near Padgett, Texas from 1926-1933. Burke attended the Elbert School and graduated from Throckmorton High School. He was inducted into the Army on 11 January 1942.

He received his gunnery wings at Jacksonville, Florida and was assigned to the anti-submarine patrol before going overseas on 5 April 1942. [Thanks to Searchers of our Past for this additional information]
