George Washington Baine was the first Baine resident on Sand Mountain, AL. He was reared by his aunt Nancy Thornhill from the age of 4 after the death of his father John Bain b.1812. He fought as a teenager in the Civil War as a member of the Home Guard. After the war he began to preach and pastored at Mt. Tabor and McCoy's Grove Churches near the Yucca area of Jackson Co.AL. He was the first to own land in what was to become downtown Pisgah from the Dover Mills area all the way past present day Pisgah High School. He was instrumental in starting a school in Pisgah at the present day grounds of Pisgah High School. His father was John Bain b. 1812 son of William Simpson Bain b. 1775 and he was of Robert Bean Sr. b. 1738. We have no clue as to the burial sites of John and William.
