William Roger “Bill” Thomas was born in Tuolumne County on August 31, 1935, to Oliver Z. Thomas and Elizabeth Jean LaTouche. They had married in Westminster, Orange County, California on July 6, 1929. They had a daughter, Lois, and William.

At age four, William and his sister were living with Melvin and Mary Kimball on the east side of Main Street in Columbia. Their parents divorced, and their mother married James Ellison Colling about 1935. She was raising James’ two daughters and working as a waitress. Their father lived alone on the same street and was employed as a boiler maker.

At the time of his father’s death on January 3, 1966, William was living in Quincy, California, and his sister, was living in Fort Bragg, California. She later moved to Ukiah, California.
