Wayne Gordon Jackson passed away on his 92nd birthday, December 10, 2010, surrounded by his loving wife, Jerry, his four daughters and numerous grandchildren. He was born December 10, 1918 to James Franklin and Anna Marcella Matheson Jackson in a little house on Cedar City's Main Street where Ron's Sporting Goods now stands. His siblings include: Douglas (Fern) Jackson, Deana (Oliver) LeFevre (deceased), Lucille (Earl) Murie (deceased), Marilyn (Bud, deceased) Bowman and Howard Jackson.

He married Idona Bowen (deceased) in September, 1940 in the St. George Temple and together they had four daughters: Jan (Bob) Hansen, Sally, (Joe) Melling, Deon (Bill) Goshorn and Deborah, who died in infancy. Wayne married Donna Mitchell (deceased) in 1978 and became a step-father to four grown sons and two teenage children: Rex and Melayne Mitchell, who he still thinks of as "his kids." In September 2001, Wayne married Jerry Berry and they had ten wonderful years together. Wayne has 16 grandchildren and 55 great grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren, who have all benefitted from his generous help, attention and his hand-made gifts.

In 1937, Wayne joined the Utah National Guard, 222nd Field Artillery Regiment, going on active duty in 1941. In 1942, he volunteered for active duty in the Army Air Corps and began his career as a pilot. He became a B-24 Bomber pilot and flew a total of 31 missions over Europe, bombing Hitler's factories, bridges and fuel repositories. When this 31 missions were completed, he volunteered for five more extremely dangerous missions, flying fuel to Patton's army in France. He left the Army Air Corps as a Captain in 1947, after having received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with Three Oak Leaf Clusters (four times).

Arriving back in Cedar City, with no job, he purchased a run-down dry cleaning business that was ready to close and in 1949, Jackson Dry Cleaners was born. This business, which is still thriving today due to Wayne's hard work and business acumen, has supported many of his posterity, including the present owner, Janae Carpenter, who is his granddaughter.

Wayne was always involved in serving and building the community of Cedar City and belonged to many different service organizations. He was Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge in 1957 and President of the Cedar Flying Club in 1958. He was also active in the local state and national chapters of the National Dry Cleaners Association, the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce, the American Legion and the World War II B-24 Bomber Group Association.

Never one to be content sitting around, Wayne worked in his shop doing stained glass windows and over his lifetime was involved in a variety of hobbies and endeavors, including: membership in the Gold Wing Motorcycle Club and Ham Radio Operators Club, designing and constructing model air planes, building wooded toys for his grandchildren, coin and stamp collecting and building a cabin from the "ground up" at Duck Creek, Utah.

Wayne is survived by his three daughters, Jan, Sally and Deon, his loving wife Jerry and her children, Allen, Carol, Layne and Mark, his grandchildren and great grandchildren; his siblings, Douglas, Earl Murie, Marilyn and Howard, and his stepchildren from the Mitchell family.
