He was the son of George & Nancy (Anderson) Livesay.

He married 1st Ellender Caldwell, 1801, Grayson County, Virginia.

He married 2nd Aleatha Goins, 19 Feb 1850 in Hancock County, Tennessee.

He was a farmer, gunsmith, and took an active part in the civil affairs of Grayson County. In 1834 he migrated to Hawkins Co. Tennessee. People were rushing in and county lines were changing. The land he settled on ended up being in Hancock County.

Virginia Pension Abstracts of the Revolution, War of 1812 and Indian Wars by Lucy McGhee, Washington D. C. 1959, Volume 5. James Livesay drafted 18 Sept. 1814 at Grayson Co. Va. courthouse; discharged there 1 Feb 1815.

In a letter from Samuel Frost dated 6 June 1881 of Lee County Va. States he is around 40 and is son of Letha Livesay, widow of James Livesay and that Livesay's first wife Nellie died 31 years ago and was buried on James's farm now in Hancock County, Tenn., then in Hawkins County. He died over 20 years ago and was buried by his first wife.

James Livesay served in Capt. T. Daltons's Co. and received B. L. Wt. # 38359 for 160 acres in 1866.

He lived in Hancock Co. 1855. widow went to Virginia and lived at Hunter's Gap in Lee Co. in 1880.
