Sarah was the daughter of Ashman Carpenter and Mary Boyle. She married "Squire" John Pettit on January 20, 1780, in New Jersey. They were the parents of Mary, Deborah, Elizabeth, Jonathan Isaac, Ashman, Sarah, Margaret, Ruth, John Carpenter, Pamela, and Martha Pettit.
