He continued the family calling in his father's shop and later in Smith Village. He served three times during the Revolutionary War, first in response to the Concord alarm, second as lieutenant in the company of Capt. Josiah Brown in 1777, and third, later in the same year, as captain of another New Ipswich company. It is characteristic of the enlistments in the earlier years of the war that these three terms of service together covered a period of only about six weeks.
