"My grandmother lived in Lewistown, and when I was visiting her I would sometimes go and spend an afternoon at Tillie's house. There was a berry bush across the alley from her house, and my sister and I used to pick berries there, eating more than we brought back!
What always strikes me about Tillie is her strength and fortitude. In 1910, she lost both her husband and her mother. Two years later, her son Herbert fell of the roof of the barn and broke his arm. The bone penetrated the skin, and wound became infected. He died in the hospital a few days later at the age of 12. Her second marriage, to Charles Henry Smith, lasted only a couple of years. I don't have a marriage date, but she was single in the 1920 census, and he died in 1922, so they could only have been together for a year or two. By the last time I saw her, about three years before she died, she had buried another son, my grandfather Ray H. Aurand. Yet she was always upbeat and positive in her outlook. I remember once when my grandmother and I were shopping and Tillie came down the street in her widow's weeds just as spry as you could imagine".
