Enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 18 March 1862 in Lebanon, Virginia. William was mustered as a private in Company B, 34th Battalion Virginia Cavalry. He was captured on 13 April 1864 in Cabell County, Virginia (now West Virginia). At Atheneum Prison in Wheeling, Virginia on 5 May 1864 William is described as age 42, height 5 feet 8 inches, dark complexion, blue eyes, dark hair, and farmer. He was transferred and arrived at Camp Chase Confederate Prison on 11 May 1864. William died of pneumonia at Camp Chase on 25 November 1864 and was buried in grave #515.
