Lieut. Franklin Marion Simpson/Simpkins
Served in Co.H 40th Ohio Vol. Inf. During the Civil War of 1861-65 He Enlisted in Columbus Ohio in Nov. 1861 for 3 years as a 2nd Lieut. He resigned his commission Jan. 2nd 1864. For Health reasons. He was wounded in the right sholder by a Confederate bayonet in the battle of Lookout Mountain GA. on Nov. 23rd 1863. He is also listed under the name Marion Simpkins in the Regimental rosters for some unknown reason.(Spelling mistake by copist or did he enlist under another name?) After the war he came out west to Nevada in the early 1870s and Joined the Local GAR Post. No.10 in Carson City NV in May of 1875 He listed his occupation as book keeper. And that is what he did until June of 1907 when he applied for a Gov't pension because of Rheumatism and his old war wound made it hard to work for a living. He was paid $30. a month until 1915 when it was increased to $40. He died Dec. 31st 1918 at age 76 of the Spanish flu during the great epidemic of 1918-19. He was buried in the GAR Section of the Lone Mountain Cemetery with full military honors. The attached C-1863 photo of Frank is from the GAR Post. No.10 Membership records (Thanks Bud K.)
