Although his death certificate states that George, the son of Thomas and Sarah Hyder Pounds, was born in Missouri, a birth place of Illinois is supported by all census records. In September of 1889 George married Celia Olson in DeKalb Co., MO and in 1899 followed his in-laws to Lincoln Co., Oklahoma Territoy. George and Celie made the trip by wagon train with six little children on board. They arrived late in the year and camped on the banks of the Cimarron River. The 1900 census for Chandler city, Lincoln Co., OK Territoy shows them living in Chandler and George listed as "day laborer". A few months later he and Celie moved to a farm in the N.W. corner of the county near Four Corners. Here three more children were born, the last of which did not survive. After the death of Celia in April of 1906 George left the farm and went to Creek Co. to work where there was an oil boom going on. He passed away May 22, 1941 while living with his granddaughter Bessie Pounds Strong at 212 Second St., in Chandler, OK. It was said by someone there that when Grandpa George died, it was early spring and "the smell of both honeysuckle and gangrene permeated the air".
