Son of Clemon and Iceyphena Hopper. William was a private in the Union Army. At the age of 18, William enlisted in the Mercer County Battalion Six-month Militia in Sept. 1861. He then enlisted in the 3rd Missouri State Militia Cavalry, Co. G on April 7, 1862 and was transferred to the 7th Missouri State Militia Cavalry, Co. K. He died of disease in Springfield, Missouri on January 6, 1863. He was 19 years old. William had three brothers that were also in the 7th Missouri State Militia, Co. K with him. They were Pvt. Creel Hopper (1840-1917), Pvt. Marion Hopper (1842-1919) and Pvt. James M. Hopper (1844-1924).

Gravesite Details

Supposed to be buried in Springfield, Missouri. National Cemetery in Springfield does not have a record of William being buried there.
