Adele Starr passed away peacefully in her sleep in Santa Monica, CA.

Adele is survived by her loving husband of sixty-nine years, Lawrence Starr. She is survived by her five children, William (Marni), Philip (Michael), Robert (Ellen), Andrew (Debbie), and Margo (Han); her grandchildren Maura (Timm), Isaac, Aaron, Majia, Emily, and Dylan, and two great-grandchildren Jeremy and Melissa. She also leaves behind her niece Barbara (Richard).

Adele was born in Brooklyn, New York, graduated from Lincoln High School with Honors. She was unable to take advantage of a scholarship to Hunter College, but later completed a BA in English at UCLA. Her brother, served in the Air Force during WWII, a bombardier, he was killed in action shortly before the end of the war, receiving the purple heart.

In 1952, Adele and Larry moved to California, where three of their five children were born. She became a true Californian, loved the weather, her family and friends.

In 1976, she founded the Los Angeles Chapter of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (P-FLAG), the first incorporated, non-profit, chapter in the organization. In 1979, she was a featured speaker on the steps of the Capitol, in the first great march in Washington in support of civil rights for Gay and Lesbian People.

She was the founding President of the National Organization of P-FLAG in 1980. Throughout the remainder of her life, she was devoted to the cause of civil rights for GLBT people, including the right to marry. She loved her family deeply, and they in turn loved her. She is sorely missed.

Funeral Services will be held at Mount Sinai Memorial Park, Hollywood Hills, at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, December 13, 2010.
