Anchorage resident Clifford Earl Newell, 57, died of natural causes Sept. 25, 2008, at Alaska Regional Hospital. A visitation was held at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E St., with services. The Rev. Scott Fuller officiated. Clifford's ashes will be scattered at a later date.

Mr. Newell was born Sept. 1, 1951, in Salem, Ohio. He worked for the State of Alaska Department of Natural Resources as a contract manager. Clifford also served in the U.S. Army and in the Alaska Army National Guard from 1973 to 2000. While in the Army, Clifford earned a number of awards including the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Clifford retired as command sergeant major for the Alaska Army National Guard. He also earned a bachelor's degree in occupational education. Clifford lived in Wasilla from 1982 to 1985. He was involved in many organizations such as Rotary and Boy Scouts, and was a member of the Methodist church. He also earned an Alaska Community Service Medal. His hobbies included golf, fishing, hunting, gardening, gold mining, cooking, camping, writing, traveling, working on his Jeep, canoe building, inventing and spending time with family. His family wrote: "Cliff knew how to enjoy his life and to share his passions for many hobbies and interests with those he loved. He met his wife, Carol, in 1977 while working for John Hancock life insurance, and they shared 30 years of marriage together. He influenced his family in so many positive ways. He was good at everything he did and loved his family very much. He cared deeply for his fellow guardsmen and all of his co-workers. He put his whole heart into every effort he made and in all of his endeavors. He was proud of his children and of his four grandchildren. No matter where he went, he left a lasting impression. He had a great sense of humor, and he lived a rich and full life. He is at rest with the Lord and will be greatly missed by all who knew him."

Survivors include his wife, Carol Newell; son, Ryan Newell; daughter and son-in-law, Kendra and Todd Loges Jr.; daughter, Lianne Newell; grandchildren, Erynn Evan and Elyssa Loges, and Caiden Newell; father and mother, Richard and Ruth Newell of Columbiana, Ohio; sister and brother-in-law, Patricia and Matt Humlie of Gig Harbor, Wash.; brother and fiancee, Randy Newell and Jayne Michelini of Wasilla; and a large extended family.
