He married Ilene Jane "Janie" Wankel on September 24, 1949, at Grace United Methodist Church in Jacksonville, in a double wedding ceremony with Janie's sister and her husband. Lester and Janie celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary this year.

Lester is survived by his loving wife, four children, Lester William "Bill" (wife, Patty) Barfield and Steven Lloyd Barfield, both of rural Jacksonville, Joyce Patricia (husband, John) Brown of rural Ashland, and Susan Janice (companion Clark Lonergan) Barfield of rural Jacksonville; nine grandchildren, Susie (husband, Shawn) Boyd and Charles William "Charlie" (wife, Nicole) Barfield, both of Jacksonville, Sarah Jane Barfield of Columbia, Missouri, Michael Steven Barfield of Jacksonville, Casey Michael McDaniel, Joseph William McDaniel, and Kayla Jane McDaniel, all of rural Jacksonville, and Abby Susan Miller and Aaron Steven Coleman, both of Jacksonville; five great-grandchildren, Dylan, Jasmine, Drake, Arian, and Dakoda; five siblings, Louise (deceased husband, Bill) Briggs of Lakeland, Florida, John Barfield of Mt. One sister, Rosalie Stark, and one brother, Harold Barfield, preceded him in death.

Lester farmed south of Lake Jacksonville since 1953. He served in the United States Army during World War II, landing in France the day the war in Europe ended. He was a member of the Woodson American Legion Post 249 and would call the numbers there during bingo. He was an avid hunter, enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, and taking trips to the West with his wife. He loved meeting his friends in town for breakfast, and cherished his wife, children, and grandchildren.
