WAKEFIELD BANNER - 28 April 1899:
******************************
Franklin Augustus Gowen died early Monday morning at his home after only a few days illness. He had been unwell at times for quite a while and his last illness was not generally known to be serious until within a short time previous to his death, when symptoms of cerebral meningitis developed.
The sudden death of Mr. Gowen removes a citizen who will be widely missed. For the past twenty years he has resided in Wakefield, and during that time he was prominent in town affairs and among the societies with which he was identified.
He served the town on many important committees and invariably took part in the town meeting proceedings. Several years
ago he was a Prohibition candidate for representative, being an enthusiastic temperance advocate.
He was a member of the Baptist church and was on the church committee and was chosen treasurer of the association.
When sixteen years old he enlisted in Company E, Seventeenth regular U. S. Infantry and served almost 16 months. He was a regular officer in the regimental association in later years and has, for years, been a prominent Grand Army man; a member of the U. M. Warren Post #12 G.A.R. He was at one time junior vice commander of the post and for many years served as chaplain.
His boyhood day were in Maine, and after serving in the war, resided in the vicinity of Boston.
He was an expert accountant of much ability; and his position of Deputy Comptroller took him to all parts of the commonwealth.
He was a fine penman and thorough, painstaking and conscientious in his work.
Interment in Lakeside Cemetery.
