On Sept. 24, 1817, Peter P. Roots was one of 13 men to found the Baptist Education Society of the State of New York. In 1819 they founded the institution in Hamilton NY that came to be known as Colgate University.

His father Benajah Roots (b. May 5, 1725 in Woodbury, CT - d. March 15, 1787) and mother Elizabeth Guernsey (b. May 4, 1736 - d. August 13, 1813) were married September 26, 1757.

His wife was Elizabeth Keep whose parents were Jabez Keep, and Sarah Chandler.
