Son of the late Charles Allen and Jane McDonald Allen of "Arlie", Hurd Street, Portland, Victoria. He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 11 February 1916 and embarked at Melbourne for active service abroad on 1 May 1916 per HMAT "Port Lincoln" (A17). He was killed in action, aged 29 years.
