Obit taken from Hebron Journal (12/7/2005): Walter Afred Swanson, son of Fritz and Bena (Jacobs) Swanson, was born Feb. 15, 1922, on a farm outside of Springfield, Neb. He was one of 14 children. He passed away Nov. 28, 2005, at Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior at the age of 83 years, nine months, and 13 days. He was united in marriage to Loetta May Mahaffey, on April 3, 1953, in Bruning. This union lasted for 27 years. In 1988 he was united in marriage to Lucille Johannsen of Rolfe, Iowa. She passed away in March of 2000. Walter took care of Lucille`s son, Donny, until Donny entered the nursing home in October of 2004. Walter worked for many years at the Zimmerman Feed Lot in Springfield. He also dressed poultry for 37 years. During hunting season, hunters from all around came to have their fowl dressed by Walter. In 1987, Walter retired from the State of Nebraska. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Frank, Carl, Theodore, John and Clarence; and sisters, Lily Kenfield, Ada Novak, Anna Meiers and Lottie Vleek. He is survived by his son, Jack A. (Jan) Swanson, Sr., of Byron; grandchildren: James (Amber) Swanson of Byron; Jack (Christina) Swanson, Jr., of Chester; Jeanne Collins of rural Chester; and LeAnn (Kevin) Novotny of Endicott; great-grandchildren, Ashley Swanson, Sean Swanson, Cheyanne Novotny, Calvin Collins, Michael Collins, Hannah Collins, Loetta Collins and Cammy Swanson; sisters, Mary Miner of Louisville and Ethel Mae Swanson of Long Beach, Calif.,; brothers, Arthur Swanson of Woodstock, Ga., and Richard Swanson of Council Bluffs, Iowa; many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held on Dec. 2, at Springfield United Methodist Church in Springfield with Pastor Murray Schmechel officiating. Music was congregational hymns, "The Old Rugged Cross," "Precious Lord, Take My Hand," "Borning Cry," and "Till We Meet Again." Jean Maystrick was the organist and played an organ medley of "Going Home." Pallbearers were James Swanson, Jack Swanson, Jr., Sean Swanson, Justin Kuhlmann, Fred Ostransky, and Dean Campbell. Honorary bearer was Donny Johannsen. Interment was in the Glendale Cemetery at Louisville. Memorials have been established to the family`s coice. Price Funeral Home of Hebron was in charge of arrangements.
