Mrs G Adams Dies

At her home in Chicago Friday Night

Funeral was held in Teutopolis Monday Morning. Was Largely Attended

This community was shocked last Saturday morning when the news reached Teutopolis that Mrs Philomena Adams had died at 11:15 PM Friday night, January 20, 1933, at her home in Chicago. Altho she had been sick for quite sometime and had been bed fast for the pat few months, nevertheless her death was a shock to many people who had not known of her illness.

Her remains were shipped to Teutopolis where they lay in state at the home of her son Albert from Saturday until Monday morning. Funeral services were conducted from St Francis Catholic Church Monday morning at 10:00 am o'clock. After which burial took place in St Francis Cemetery. Rev Cleete Adams, OFM, of Washington DC, USA, a son of the deceased, was the celebrant of the Solemn Requiem High Mass, being assisted at the altar by Rev Father Weishaar of Terre Haute, Harrison, Vigo, Indiana, USA, as deacon, and Rev John Koebele of Quincy, Adams, Ill., a nephew, as sub-deacon. Rev Alphonse Coan of St Joseph's Seminary was Master-of -ceremonies. Other priests in the sanctuary during the Mass were: Rev John Gramke and Rev Oscar Shubert of Effingham; Rev George Faller of Sigel; Rev Oscar Wenet of Dieterich, Rev Roger Middendorf, OFM and Rev Conrad Wllbraun, of St Joseph's Seminary; Rev Peter Nolan, OFM, Rev Ephrem Muench, OFM, and Rev Angelus Zwiesler, OFM of the local monastery.

Miss Philomena Koebele was born on August 11, 1859, at Rich, Cook County, Ill and died on January 20, 1933, making her age at the time of her death 73 years, 5 months and 9 days. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs Landelin Koebele nee Eva Weishaar, pioneer residents of the Island Grove community.

At the tender age of eleven she moved with her parents to Island Grove. During her youth she also attended the Sisters' Boarding School in Teutopolis.

When grown to womanhood she was united in marriage to George Adams, on May 14, 1877, who preceded her in death in January 12, 19I6. One son and three daughters have also entered into eternity: Elizabeth, died in infancy; Hubert who, died while at Camp McClellan during the World War on October 21, 1918; Mrs Leo (Dora) Jansen who died on December 2, 1932 and Mrs Frank (Matilda) Hutmacher passed away on January 5th of this year.

Four Daughters and three sons are left to mourn their Mother's death. They are: Mrs Wm (Anna) Malloy, Oak Forest; Mrs Eugene (Della) Flach, Rogers Park; Misses Helen and Martha Adams, who were living at Home in Chicago; Anthony F., Oak Park, Albert of Teutopolis and Rev Clete (Reuben) Adams, 0. F. M., of Washington, D. C

Thirty grandchildren also survive; besides two brothers: Stephen and Michael Koebele, both of Island Grove, and four sisters, namely: Mrs Mary M. Adams, Mrs Katherine Wolf, Mrs Christine Mammoser and (Anna) Ven. Sr..M. Osmana, S. S. N. D. of the Academy of Our Lady, all of Chicago. Two brothers and four sisters have proceeded her to the Great Beyond who are: Frank Koebele, Rev Joseph Koebele, died March 26, 1907, a member of the Vincentian Order; Frances Koebele; Mts; Phillipina Adams; (Tillie) Ven. Sr. M. Ludovica, who belonged to the Poor Handmaids of Christ; and Julia Koebele.

Mr. and Mrs Adams lived on a farm in St Francis township after their marriage. In March 1920 after Mr. Adams' death, Mrs Adams moved to Teutopolis where she lived until October 1927 when she left for Chicago to make her home with her daughters Helen and Martha until her death. She was a devout Catholic wife and mother, being a member of the local branch of the Third Order of St Francis and also of the Married Ladies Sodality of St Francis parish for many years. She had a large acquaintance and many friends both in Island Grove and in Teutopolis and was always ready to help them in time of need. Even tho death has taken her from their midst, she will be lovingly remembered.
