Meint Johnson, Old time Ireton Resident Passes Away At His Home At The Age of 78
The angel of death has again entered the Ireton home, and has taken an old time resident, Meint Johnson. He was a familiar character on the streets of Ireton, and only his recent illness compelled him to remain at home.
Meint. H. Johnson, son of Harm M. Johnson and Gebke D nee Meiners, was born at Felde, Amt Aurich, Ostfriesland, Germany, April 13, 1850, and died at Ireton, Iowa, on April 15, 1928, at the age of 78 years and 2 days.
In 1856 when Meint was 6 years old, the family came to American and settled at Mt. Olive. Illinois. There he received his schooling, and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith. When he was a young man the family moved to Harvel, Illinois. There, in 1879, he was married to Mary Jane Engle of Harvel. Their marriage was blessed with twelve children, two of which preceded the father into eternity; George, at age 6, and Martha as an infant.
After ten year's residence at Harvel, Illinois, the family came to Iowa, in 1889, and rented a farm southwest of Ireton. Four years later, the deceased purchased a farm north of Ireton, and the family made it their home for 18 years.
In 1911, the parents and younger children came to Ireton, and established the home in which the deceased spent the remainder of his life, 17 years being added. For some time he had been in failing health, but always managed to be about until two months ago.
About ten days ago, a severe gall bladder infection set in. It was thought that an operation would be fatal. Life waged it's battle but gradually ebbed out. The final summons came Sunday evening.
