"Gloria Clarice West Giles Southerd was born in Moultrie, and she traveled with her husband while he served in the USAF and Federal Agriculture Inspectors before they retired and settled in Jacksonville, Fla.. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church and also had affiliations with Blair Road Baptist Church and Cecil Field Chapel. She was chaplain of the New Beginning Friends organization for widows and widowers, co-founder and president for West family organization, a lifetime member of Jacksonville Genealogy Society, where she served many different offices including president. She was also a lifetime member of The Chestnut Tree Organization and attended Trinity College and Florida Community College.

Beginning in 1960, she worked as the first undercover security woman for the Arlans Department Store in Topeka, Kan., with the highest letter of recommendations, and, in 1980, worked as the first woman as a federal agriculture inspector for tomatoes in Frogmore, S.C.

"Gloria loved and served faithfully our Lord Jesus Christ through spoken and unspoken words and works — love in action — for all her family, friends, the sick, widows and widowers up to the date of departure. She was baptized as a teenager in the Little River located in Georgia," said her family.

Her passion was family history and she taught others how to search their family, through workshops, radio and speaking in public, her family also said. She was the great-great-granddaughter of pioneer Henry Crawford Tucker, founder of Colquitt County and father of 32 children. She believed in a good education and volunteered to help elementary children read, her family remembered of her. She loved to read and research all issues and topics and could carry on a very intelligent conversation with anyone, regardless of their walk in life, they also added.

"A very fine lady with outstanding ability to get along with people. Our beloved mother, trusted friend, wise counselor, family mediator, political leader, religious leader shall be sorely missed," the family said.

Gloria leavs three children, Cynthi, Sherry and Aaron; two sisters, Grace and Susa; six grandchildren, Tammy, Nicole, Aaron, Vickie, Christy and Dennis; and four great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Danny, Trina and Jacob.

She was preceded in death be her husband, retired Air Force Master Sgt. George Dellis Southerd; her father, Clyde William West; her mother, Mamie Alberta Dixon-West-Vick; and a great-granddaughter, Gracie Clarice Carter.
